Leonard Cohen

Just got back from seeing Leonard Cohen tonight at the NAC. It was absolutely amazing! Possibly the best concert I’ve ever been to, or at least in the top 5. Amazing. I can’t believe he’s 74. I can’t believe I finally saw him live. I can’t believe I was in the same room as him, etc etc. I’ll spare you the fangirlisms. Seriously though, he played all the songs I wanted him to. I cried during Bird on the Wire, then during Anthem, and again during Hallelujah. It wasn’t sobbing or anything, but it was enough for A to notice and ask me if I was ok (several times).  I was cool and all, I just couldn’t help it. Those aren’t even my favourite songs, but the tears came rolling on down. I dunno. His band was excellent too. Very talented folks. They did several encores too!

Here’s a picture of A and I…

Here’s the only phone photo that turned out….

That makes us look so far away, but we actually had pretty decent seats. Photos are not my phone’s forte. The videos I took had great audio, however. I might share them later.

It was funny… the seat in front of me was empty for the first few songs. I had a great view. Then this guy comes rushing in and sits down. I could still see and all, but it was just kinda weird that the guy was late. Anyhow, during the intermission, with the lights on, we realize the guy is Jack Layton – leader of the NDP!

laytonHis wife was sitting to his left, too. I said “Hi” to him during the break, but nothing else because it felt weird talking to him on his “off” time.  A asked him what he thought of the show, and he replied “Wonderful!” So yeah, Jack likes Leonard Cohen… and he sits with the regular folks like us… even more reasons to vote NDP!

Anyhow… the show ended at 11, so we caught a bus back to my place. A took off shortly after, since he has work tomorrow.  It was an awesome night. I finally saw Leonard Cohen live and was completely satisfied. Randomly met Jack Layton. And had my dear A sitting beside me the whole time. I’m happy.

I’ve always wanted to see Leonard Cohen live. Next best thing is experiencing it vicariously through you. (I love the picture of you and A.)

    completely surreal!
It’s kind of depressing, but I always thought he’d quit touring (or pass away) before I had a chance to see him. I’m still not used to saying that I’ve “seen” him. It was so pricey, but 100% worth it!

I’m thinking of changing this comment thread plug-in. It’s pretty hit and miss.

I think you can now cross #19 off your list of things to do before you die.
